7 Things to Ask When Hiring a Managed IT Provider

The choice to switch to a Managed IT provider can seem overwhelming.

Knowing you need revamp your IT infrastructure and knowing how are two different things. We can help you bridge that gap, providing you with the confidence to choose the best provider.

Identify the current strengths and weaknesses of your business. Which parts of IT you can take care of in-house which parts would you prefer to outsource? Additionally, have some goals and specific requests in mind for how you envision the provider helping your business.

Once you’re ready to start making calls, be sure to ask the following questions of your potential providers:

  1. What services do you offer?

If you need multiple pieces of your IT managed, you want to ensure the company you choose is a full-service Managed IT provider. Additionally, you may choose to expand your services down the road so you will want a company who offers more than you currently need.

  1. Do you have experience working within our industry and our size of company?

Does the provider offers services geared to the size of your company? If you’re a small business and the provider usually works with large companies, it is unlikely to be match. Additionally, you might want to seek a provider who has experience in your industry and understands the unique challenges you face.

  1. Does your team have IT certifications?

An experienced IT team will be certified. Providers that partner with top technology companies in the industry must be certified to do so. Some of the common certifications to look for are CompTIA A+, Network+ and Microsoft certifications such as MSCA and MSCE.

  1. What level of service can I expect?

Savings and great tools won’t make up for poor service! A professional IT provider will have an efficient system in place to quickly direct tickets to the appropriate team member. This system should include after-hours/weekend access, ability to contact a live person if needed and quick response times (especially in an emergency). You should also expect an on-going, proactive review of your IT infrastructure to prevent issues before they arise.

  1. How do you deliver and charge for managed services?

Some companies offer flat fees, hourly charges and “by-device” pricing. Don’t be afraid to seek clarification so that you’re not surprised at the end of the month with unexpected charges or after-hour fees. Service Level Agreements are a great choice!

  1. How do I report a problem?

Your IT provider should have an easy-to-follow protocol on how to report a problem and it should be flexible enough to provide alternatives if the situation is urgent. Standard procedure may be to submit a ticket via email, but if an immediate need arises, you should be able to call your provider.

  1. Do you have client testimonials I can review?

A professional Managed IT provider will have a list of quality references and letters of recommendation. Do your part and follow-up with these references, they may be able to give you some great insight into the provider you want to choose!
